ADHD & Autism

The GP referral process

GPs cannot start ADHD medication it must be prescribed and monitored by an ADHD specialist.

Your GP will assess your symptoms or those of your child and if the GP agrees the referral is necessary you will be given a list of approved providers to choose from, please note we are unable to refer to any provider not on the list.

Please be aware that all the providers will have a lengthy waiting list. Furthermore, due to the unprecedented number of referral requests we are receiving the process from receipt of your documentation to the practice making the referral to your chosen provider can take up to 28 days.

Shared Care Agreements

Once you have received your diagnosis and your medication is stable your provider will ask your GP to take over routine prescribing via a shared care agreement.  Note that GPs are not legally forced to accept these agreements, therefore for the practice to agree, you must meet the criteria below:

  • Your diagnosis must have been made by a NHS Right to Choose Provider.
  • The provider must have initiated medication.
  • You must be engaged with the provider, i.e. attended all appointments and provided requested information.

If you do not meet the above, you will need to restart the referral process.

The following are the providers we can refer to via the Right to Choose pathway as approved by Norfolk & Suffolk ICB.

Child 6 years & over

Adult 18 years & over
